Boost – love life!

Boost founder and managing director Janine Allis understands first hand the demands life can put on an individual.  As a working mother of three young boys, she loves anything that is able to simplify her life and daily activities, while at the same time maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Janine’s struggles to find healthy fast food alternatives for her three boys, at a time when the health sector was growing from strength to strength, led to the eventual development of Boost Juice.

The first Boost Juice Bar opened in May 2000, and today more than 150 Boost Juice Bars are open throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Love life - love to be healthy!

Healthy living does not simply mean eating well, but it also includes maintaining a balance between a healthy diet, exercise and general lifestyle.

TD4 Low Fat Frozen Yoghurt

Boost’s TD4 low fat frozen yoghurts are available in three delicious flavours: vanilla, strawberry and mango.  The acidophilus and live culture found in the yoghurt can help to help maintain a healthy digestive system by creating a positive balance of bacteria.

Yoghurt, being a dairy product, is also a great source of calcium and protein.

Boost Super Supplements

Boost Super Supplements are made up of herbs, minerals and vitamins, and are intended to add a healthy ‘boost’ to an already-nutritious product.  The dosages of each supplement are not in therapeutic levels because they are a food product, not a tablet or medicine.  Boost Super Supplements include the Energiser BOOST, Stress Relief BOOST, the Antioxidant BOOST and more.

Wonderful Wheatgrass

Taken in the form of a shot wheatgrass is said to be just as nutritious as downing a bunch of fresh leafy green vegetables but a whole lot easier to swallow!  Wheatgrass is a great source of essential vitamins and minerals, and it is also said to be a great source of iron as it increases energy levels by assisting red blood cells in pumping oxygen around the body.

Sugars

Boost smoothies contain on average around 10% sugar, largely derived from the fructose present in the fruit.  Fructose is a natural sugar that occurs in all fruits and most vegetables, for example a tomato contains 2.7% sugar, celery has 1.6%, beetroot 6.6% and beans 1.7%.  When it comes to fruit, strawberries contain 4.6% sugar, blueberries 8.4%, mango 14.5% and banana 12.4%.  If we removed some of the fruits from our juices and smoothies, the sugar content would be reduced, however we would lose the excellent nutritional benefits derived from these fruits.

Love life … love the environment!

Boost Juice Bars take environmental issues very seriously and endeavour to ensure all packaging remains environmentally friendly.

Prior to choosing our Boost cups, we sourced several independent studies to determine which option would be the most environmentally-friendly.  These studies showed us that:

-          polystyrene foam requires up to six times less resources to produce than other alternatives

-          polystyrene foam contains no CFCs or any other ozone-depleting chemicals

-          less than 1% of the nation’s natural gas and petroleum are used in the production of polystyrene products

A large concern of many individuals is biodegradability of such packaging.  Very little waste discarded in our highly engineered landfills actually biodegrades. This is because it has been shown that biodegradable plastics can pose “adverse environmental risks”. These include oxygen depletion in waterways, partial biodegradation that could endanger wildlife and the potential for even more littering behaviour where individuals believe products they discard will merely disappear in time.  Furthermore biodegradation of materials may create harmful by-products such as liquids or gases, having the potential to contaminate groundwater, air, and wildlife. As a result landfills have been designed to minimise contact with the requirements of biodegradation (air and water) in an attempt to limit this process.

Polystyrene packaging has additionally proven to be sanitary, convenient and sturdy protecting products it houses against moisture and maintaining its strength and shape even after long periods of time.  Polystyrene has furthermore proven to be very efficient with only 5% of foam packaging used constituting as polystyrene and the rest as air!

Recycling of post-consumer plastics is a relatively new technology, compared with facilities available for recycling paper, glass, or steel.  As such it is not as yet widely available for polystyrene products to be easily recycled…yet!  Until that time that such facilities become available Boost Juice will continue to encourage all its customers to behave responsibly and place litter in a waste bin.
